What Makes Thai Herbs Amazing?

There are many things that are characteristics of Thailand, and have made a brand name for Thailand. These are Thai boxing, Thai dance, Thai silk, Thai rice, Thai fruits and of course, Thai food. The ingredients that make Thai food amazing are Thai 'herbs', which, together with 'spices', have been ingeniously blended in Thai cuisine. The recipes of Thai food have as their main ingredients.

Although most herbs are used are used as condiments or seasoning materials, Thai hers are somewhat different from all other herbs. They have characteristic taste and aroma that are not found in other herbs. They have characteristic taste and aroma that are not found in other herbs. For example, 'Horapha' or Thai basil (Ocimum basilicum), the same species as the well-known sweet basils, has distinct aroma and flovor from that of other sweet basils and is well suited for several Thai dishes, which cannot be replaced with other sweet basils or other herbal materials. These dishes include 'Kaeng Khieo Wan', 'Kaeng Phet', 'Phat Makheua Yao', stc.

Similarly, 'Kaphrao' or Thai holy basil (Ocimun tenuiflorum), has a distinct flavor and aroma from other holy basil (which has rarely been used as herbs as herbs in other countries); it has made Thai dishes, such as 'Kai Pat Bai Kaphrao', very well known to the Thais as well as foreigners. 'Maeng Lak' or hairy basil (Ocimum americanum) is indispensable in 'Khanom Chin Nam Ya' and 'Kaeng Riang'. 'Makrut' or kaffir lime (Citrus hvstrix) whose leaves are used in many Thai dishes, gives a unique aroma and flavorl it is a major ingredient of the world famous Thai soup, known as 'Tom Yam Kung'. Like Thai spices, Thai herbs are uniquely blended with Thai dishes such that they are inseoarable. 'Tom Yam Kung'.

For example, is world famous because it contains a blend of many herbs (and also a few spices), among them kaffir lime leaves, lemon grass stem, lime juice and chili (the last three, although not the leafy nor soft flowering parts of plant, but are treated here as herbs since they come from fleshy part of the plant). Two other related types of Thai dishes, 'Yam' and 'Phla'.

Will not taste as good without such herbs as kitchen mint, lemon grass and lime.
In addition to adding flavor to the dishes, most Thai herbs also provide health benefits from their inherent medicinal properties. Thus, it is fair to say that Thai herbs. With their beautiful form with nice green color, are added as a flavoring, seasoning, or garnish, making Thai dishes both tasty and beautiful, as well as soothing the stomach with their stomach with their refreshing and medicinal properties.

Discover Thailand’s Priceless Beauty

The Benjarong is Thailand’s priceless contribution to Asian pottery. Once the prized possession of royal palaces and upper-class Thais, it is today, the pride and perfection of ancient Thai craftsmanship.

But what exactly is the Benjarong and why does it possess such magical qualities with sheer beauty and serenity? Read on to unravel the history and making of this ancient masterpiece.

History of the Benjarong

During the early Ayutthaya period (1350 – 1767), Thai craftsmen made a somewhat crude multi-colored earthenware known today as the Benjarong – a term based on the Sanskrit words panch, meaning five, and rang, meaning colors, thus literally referring to the ‘five-colored.’ The style of painting multi-colored enamels on a white porcelain base was influenced by the Chinese Ming dynasty, and by the 17th century, the Benjarong became an exclusive household possession of rulers and high nobility – marking a period where high quality Benjarongs with unique Thai designs were produced. Colored enamels added over the glaze were fused to the surface in a descending scale of temperatures. The Benjarongs were also decorated with swirling flame-like motifs and Thai-style thepanoms, or celestial beings. These were made exclusively for the royal household as utilitarian items, such as rice bowls, stem plates and covered water jars. Shortly after, artisans applied 12 or 18 carat gold onto Benjarongs to enhance their appearance.

The Making of a Benjarong

The making of the Benjarong is a long and arduous process requiring great patience and complete dedication. A prolonged heat treatment is required after the object is made, and once again after the hand painting is done. The drying process of the hand painting cannot be accelerated by using a fan or blower, as this prevents the colors from fusing into the ceramics.

The process:

1.The ceramic ware is hand made into the specific size and shape desired.
2.The ceramic ware is heated at over 500 degrees for over 6-7 hours.
3.A few hours is spent on polishing the baked ceramic ware to smoothen the surface.
4.A thin layer of glaze is applied onto the smoothened ceramic ware.
5.The ceramic ware is heated once again to give it a glazed and polished surface.
6.A craftsman then hand paints some designs onto the polished ceramic ware.
7.Every color needs to be completely dried in order to apply a new color, taking from hours to days to complete.
8.The finished hand painting on the ceramic ware is left to dry for another 6 hours.
9.The painted ceramic ware is heated once again at over 500 degrees for 5-6 hours, as this ensures that the colors are fused into the Benjarong.

The Benjarong today is one of the most popular types of ceramics in Thailand. Known to be the most exquisite for its hand painted designs, it is of little wonder that these masterpieces are exclusively produced by only the most talented and highly skilled of Thai artisans.

Pai In The Sky

The small town of Pai is not like any other town you may visit in Thailand. It has developed a unique and distinct character of its own, which is based on atmosphere rather than any special attractions. It has a remote location, not far from one of Thailand's most northern towns, Mae Hong Song, and next to the huge wilderness of the off-limits Shan State in Burma.

The town itself is situated in a mostly dry and flat area that looks similar to many other rural farming areas in this part of Thailand. Getting here is part of the fun as the narrow road winds over the top of some beautiful mountains. The forests are lush and dense, the temperature is cool and the vistas are truly breathtaking. Arriving in Pai makes you feel as though you have escaped the real world.

Pai attracts many different types of people, from new age travellers through to those looking for some peace and relaxation. It's a far cry from the pollution and noise of Bangkok, or the upmarket hotels and commercialism of Phuket. There are none of the expensive and lavish resorts found elsewhere in Thailand.

The riverside bungalows here are the perfect place to stay and provide you with everything you need. The basic facilities and laid-back service are all part of the appeal, and the lack of development in the town has helped retain the chilled out reputation it has.

But don't be fooled in to thinking that there isn't anything to do in Pai. There is a good choice of activities offered by numerous agents in the town including enduro motorcycle excursions, white-water rafting and trekking. If you don't want to be part of an organised group, then you can do your own thing by visiting Pai Canyon or by making a trip to the waterfall in the northwest of the town.

Another popular option is to rent a motorbike and cruise along some of the roads in the valley. The more adventurous might want to try some of the challenging off-road trails nearby. If, however, you just want to relax, then you won't be disappointed either. It's also worth taking the time to call in at the small elephant camp located a short distance from the town, and at the hot springs which are a great place to head to on a chilly winter morning.

Pai has a steady flow of visitors during the dry winter months when the weather is at its best. During the monsoon rains, tourist numbers drop and it’s usually the backpackers that keep businesses ticking over. The town also has a small group of expats that have escaped their stress-filled lives in their native countries for something completely different. They somehow manage to get by with the odd bit of work and are happy to blend in with the local lifestyle.

Pai isn't a place solely for foreigners as the Thais also are regular visitors. University students in particular enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and bohemian atmosphere, and they also benefit from the cheap lodgings and restaurants. Regular tour buses on their way to Mae Hong Song often call in for a brief stop.

If you have a limited amount of time and it's your first visit to the area, then it's a great way to experience this part of Northern Thailand. There is an established 'loop' that takes you to Pai, Mae Hong Song and returns to Chiang Mai via the southern approach and the impressive Doi Inthanon National Park.

There has been a steady rise in visitor numbers in Pai over the last several years, mainly due to its presence in various guide books and its establishment on the backpacker trail. The local people have benefited in many ways as they continue to build restaurants, bars, guesthouses and set up tour agencies. Fortunately, none of the international hotel groups have bought land or property in the area, so it retains a small town feel.

However, the old grass airport nearby has recently been paved, so it seems unlikely that Pai will retain its special appeal forever. If you're planning a visit in the near future, then you will surely enjoy the relaxed and laid back pace of life, beautiful scenery, traffic-free roads and the wide choice of great bars and restaurants.

Often in Northern Thailand, Andrew Bond always enjoys visiting Pai. He specialises in digging up the right websites to help with his travel adventures, he advises;

Thai Massage - For Healing & Wellbeing

Thai Massage is one of the world's oldest healing modalities and originates from the time of the Buddha over 2500 years ago.

Introduced to Thailand by an Indian doctor, ‘Nuad Phaen Boran’ as is it known in Thailand, correctly translates as Ancient Massage or Traditional Massage. Here it is more widely known as Thai Massage.

Thai Massage is considered an ancient art of body therapy for health, healing, and transformation.

The History of Thai Massage

Thai massage has been performed for centuries by monks in Southeast Asia as one element of indigenous Thai medicine.

As with much of traditional oriental medicine, illness is seen as an imbalance of the mind, body and spirit or ‘chi’.

Thai massage is based on the concept of invisible energy lines running through the body. These energy lines known as ‘Prana Nadis’ supply us with vital energy.

‘Prana’ (life energy) is absorbed with the air we breathe and with the food we eat. Disturbances in the flow of energy result in an insufficient supply of Prana, which in turn lead to sickness.

Thai massage selects ten energy mainlines on which there are significantly important acupressure points. Working on these energy mainlines, Thai massage breaks the blockades, stimulates the free flow of Prana, and helps to restore general well-being.

Thai Massage – How Does it Work?

Thai Massage focuses on interactive manipulation and uses two primary procedures.

These include the therapist applying gentle pressure with the hands and feet along the energy lines and a variety of passive stretching movements to manipulate your body into a series of postures.

These movements help to align the energies of the body.

Traditional Thai massage differs greatly from traditional massage where kneading of muscles and strokes of varying lengths and pressure are used to stimulate, calm or relax.

It works more with the energy body rather than with the physical body and is based on a gentle but vigorous pressure, the pressing of energy points and a lot of stretching.

What are the Benefits of Thai Massage?

Although Thai massage is considered more vigorous than traditional massage, the effect is uniquely energizing as well as relaxing.

Sometimes referred to as Thai yoga, because of the ‘assisted stretching’, Thai massage stimulates and energizes the body and releases tension and toxins from joints, muscles and connective tissue.

Thai massage has been used for many years to treat degenerative illness and promote wellness and can be beneficial for the young or old, healthy or not so healthy, the active or not so active.

The key benefits include:

• stimulates internal organs

• balances the body's energy system

• adjusts the skeletal structure

• relieves muscular and joint tension

• increases flexibility

Thai Massage – Is it Safe for Everyone?

Thai massage is relatively safe but is not appropriate for people with certain medical conditions such as serious back or knee injuries, or pregnant women.

If in doubt you should seek advice from your doctor.

What to expect from a Thai Massage?

Applied in a quiet meditative atmosphere, Thai massage creates space in the musculoskeletal structure, opening up the body and allowing it to regain flexibility and ease of movement.

When performed in Thailand, Thai massage is seen as a spiritual practice and in order to perform the massage in the meditative mood that is required, the session will start with a meditative prayer to fully center the masseur on his or her work.

It is believed that only a masseur working in a meditative mood can have intuition for the lines of energy flow in the body.

Traditionally, Thai massage is performed on a padded floor mat instead of a table or couch, no oil is used and you stay fully dressed, so loose comfortable clothing is advised.

Thai Massage – Choosing a Therapist

To get the best from a traditional Thai massage, ensure you seek a therapist that is suitably qualified.

Thai massage is a great way to improve overall wellbeing and is more popular than ever. Try a Thai massage for yourself and you will be glad you did.

The Akha Hill Tribe In Chiang Rai

For many visitors to Northern Thailand, a trip to visit one of the region's colourful hill tribes is a necessity. These minority groups have their photos splashed across tourist brochures and websites, adding to their appeal and intrigue. Some of the villages receive tour buses and trekking groups on a regular basis as the financial benefits outweigh any concerns over privacy.

The harsh reality of the situation is that most of these hill tribes have been marginalised and live in abject poverty. Few of them are officially recognised by the Thai authorities and they exist without any ID cards or rights. For the many tourists who are happy to get a glimpse of their rural lifestyles, they are often completely unaware of the hardship and suffering they endure.

There are over half a dozen different tribes in the area, and they are all unique in their own way with different languages, dress and customs. Among the poorest of these tribes are the Akha and consequently, they receive special attention from charity workers, anthropologists and missionary groups. They are known to the Thais by the somewhat derogatory name Egor and are usually considered worthless peasants at the bottom of the social scale.

Their origins can be traced back over a century to Tibet, before they migrated to Burma, Laos and Thailand, along with other hill tribes. Over the last two decades, they have been continually persecuted by the military regime in Burma, forcing them to flee and settle in Thailand as refugees. They remain stateless despite having been here so long, and are often exploited by corrupt officials and drug barons in the area.

The Akhas use a Lolo-Burmese language, although it has never been written down, making it difficult to trace its history accurately. Any known history has been passed on by mouth over the generations. Civil rights groups have recently created a system to document their language.

There are over 300,000 Akhas living in Thailand with the majority of the villages located in the province of Chiang Rai. They are usually subsistence farmers who grow vegetables and rice on the mountainsides, and raise pigs and chickens. The men often work in surrounding rice and tobacco fields, starting early in the morning and continuing until the last light. They receive about 100 baht per day, which is considerably less than the national minimum wage.

Their villages are often in remote locations and can be difficult to reach, meaning that the Akhas seldom leave their immediate area. Running water is still not available to all of the tribes so women are sometimes charged with the task of filling up large containers from a nearby well several times a day. A few villages have been fortunate enough to be electrified resulting in a marked improvement in living conditions. Entire families live in a simple houses constructed from bamboo and grass.

Missionary groups operating in the area have also increased problems of a religious nature. Their assistance is often dependant on certain conditions as they try to convert the Akhas to Christianity. Their methods are controversial, although the missionaries would say that they can help to improve their living conditions and future opportunities.

Questionable practices such as removing children from their family homes to give them a more civilised upbringing, has led to much criticism. The religion of the Akha people is closely tied to animism, with a strong focus on honouring ancestors and their parents, and a belief in both good and bad spirits. The presence of certain Christian groups has led to an erosion of their unique and fascinating culture.

The lack of ID cards has not stopped some of the women abandoning their villages in search of work in the big cities. Many end up working in prostitution or poorly paid massage parlours. Unfortunately, the young men often suffer a worse fate as they became smugglers for powerful drug barons. During the government crackdown on drugs in 2003, over 2,000 people were killed, many of them Akha.

The future for the Akha hilltribe is hard to predict as tourism continues to thrive in the area and the Thai authorities overlook them. Their unique culture is slowly fading away as the tour groups traipse through the villages and disturb their normal lives.

Put Some Spice Into Your Thailand Holiday With Adventure Trips

Thailand is best known for its southern beaches and nightlife, and many visitors spend their days lazing on the beach before hitting the bars and discos. But those seeking more exciting pastimes are also well catered for, with a wide variety of adventure activities ranging from trekking and bamboo rafting to more heart stopping wild water rafting or even bungee jumping.

Away from the beaches, the southern islands offer sea kayaking and game fishing. Koh Samui, Krabi and Phuket are ideal bases for organizing sea canoeing or kayaking trips, with lots of operators offering tours lasting from one to several days. Highlights include caves only reachable by sea and hidden lagoons where you can swim and camp overnight.

Those who want to put their hunting skills to the test can do worse than going game fishing in the Andaman Sea off Phuket. Here you can catch a wide variety of fish, including sailfish, tooth tuna and swordfish. Day outings, night fishing or trips lasting several days can easily be organized from here. Be aware that all catches must be released back into the sea immediately.

Land rats are advised to head north, where the city of Chiang Mai is a prime base for embarking on adventure trips. Trekking is the most popular choice here and tourists have enjoyed more or less arduous treks to hill tribe villages for several decades now.

Treks can last from one day to a week, and the most important factor when deciding on which company to choose is to ask fellow travellers who have just returned from a trek. Most tours involve a few hours of walking a day, and elephant riding, bamboo rafting and overnight stays in mountain villages are the main highlights.

Splashing fun can be found on the many rivers in the north, where river rafting in inflatable boats is becoming increasingly popular. The Pai River in Mae Hong Son Province offers abundant birdlife and swimming monkeys. The Nam Wa near Nan has welcomed rafters longer than any other waterway in Thailand and boasts some of the wildest rapids. Near Chiang Mai is the Mae Cham River, perfect for day outings. The best time for rafting is from mid-June to end of January, when the water levels are not too high or too low.

Don’t miss out on caving, one of the highlights in the northern provinces. Pang Mapha district between Pai and Mae Hong Son offers some of Asia’s most spectacular cave networks. Many of these were first explored by the Australian owner of Cave Lodge, the ideal base for spelunking. Here you can hire experienced guides to lead you through the lesser known caves, or just get a map and set off on your own to explore on of the many caves easily explored without a guide.

If you want to really mix it up, the Mae Sa Valley is an adventurer’s paradise. Just 20kms outside of Chiang Mai, bungee jumping, paint-balling, archery, ATV riding and archery are all available here within a few kilometres of each other. There is no shortage of adventure for fun seekers in Thailand.

Corrections Museum - Where the Gruesome Facet of Thai History Displayed

Thailand is a well known destination for many unusual attractions. The Corrections Museum in Bangkok is one of the many atypical destinations, which is rich in historical value. The Corrections Museum, located in Maha Chai Road preserves gruesome facets of Thai prison history.

The museum location was the site of the Bangkok maximum security prison that was built under the sovereignty of King Rama V in 1890. The government decided to demolish the prison in 1987. In order to establish the prison museum in 1939, three blocks, two watchtowers, a cellblock, and a side of the prison were preserved. The museum is famous for showcasing brutalism of prison life of offenders in that time.

As visitors explore the museum exhibits, the former penal system which was based on vengeance and severe punishments is well elaborated. The collections of life-sized sculptures that portray painful acts of frightening corporal punishments are successful in effortlessly convincing the museum visitors of the fearsome consequences of crimes and misbehavior of yesteryear.

The museum visits begin by exhibiting several portraits of the former prison and its demolition. There is also a scaled replica of the former prison compound and the museum with the public park. The upper stories of the museum display the many processes of punishing prisoners. The ones that expose the beheading of prisoners and other execution methods are certain to disturb the viewers emotionally, as they give incredibly horrible impressions of the tormented prisoners and the wrathful prison guards.

After the period of decapitation, where the sword was the primary weapon used, shooting became the standard method of execution. The replicas of execution demonstrate the criminals being tied behind a screen and the executioner shooting the heads with a rifle placed on a stand on the other side of the screen.

The other blocks of the museum are a pleasant release from the grisly execution chambers. These exhibit furniture and handicraft which were used in the prison, some which were made by the prisoners. A public park is also located in the museum area using the remaining land of the former prison. The park is now called the "Romanni Nart" and its pleasance undoes the emotional ordeal caused by the museum demonstrations.

The museum requires prior appointments made for visits, from Monday to Saturday. Moreover the museum is located in an area where many outstanding accommodation facilities are available. For instance, prominent Bangkok Serviced Apartments such as Somerset Amar Garden are a noteworthy example of providers of both long and short stay facilities in a perfectly harmonized atmosphere.

Top 6 Tattoo Design Ideas

Tattoos are usually permanent. Therefore, finding the right design should be as important as your decision to get a tattoo. After all there is nothing like the misery or regret a person could feel over a bad design. To help you make your decision, you should seriously consider these top sources of tattoo design ideas.

So you want to get a tattoo, but cannot decide what tattoo design ideas you are looking for? There are so many different ways that you can express your personality, through art on your body, which makes it difficult to decide what you want. You should have a specific reason for getting a tattoo, it may be to remember a loved one, or you may just want to express your own individuality. Whatever your reason may be, finding the right tattoo design ideas for you may be a bit of a challenge.

Tattoo Artists

The first and number one source of tattoo design ideas is reputable tattoo artists themselves. An artist who has been doing his trade for quite sometime and has a wide base of satisfied customers would know first hand about good designs and tattoo design ideas that would specifically fit you.

Tattoo artists can help you understand the meaning of a design, and you can easily discuss with them the design that best suits your personality. You can even give an artist your idea and leave the designing to him. The downside to this is that different artists have different opinions and you often have to do a lot of leg work and design book flipping to find the best artist and design

Online Galleries

The best tattoo designs can also be found on online galleries. There are lots of free and paid galleries to choose from. These galleries contain thousands of designs conveniently arranged in categories with new designs regularly coming in. The best thing about searching online for tattoo design ideas is that you can simply browse in the comfort of your own home. For a fee, you can print a design that you like and take it to an artist. If you do not have an artist yet, some galleries will offer you a directory of tattoo artists near your place.

Forums

Ideas are simply limitless in forums. There are numerous independent or gallery attached tattoo forums to choose from. In these forums you can upload your designs and ask forum members to give their opinion about it. You can also comment on the designs of others and maybe even get some inspiration from the member uploaded designs. This is a great way to interact and ask real average people like you their unbiased opinion.

Printed Material

Who says you need to restrict your tattoo design ideas on catalogs and galleries. Look through an assortment of books printed material for possible tattoo design ideas. You can flip through your favorite comic books or even look in science, astrology, psychology, archeology, sociology and anthropology books.

Other People

Consider asking friends and family members for design ideas also, especially those who are fond of the art themselves. Aside from these people, you could also simply observe what other people have and form a judgment on which designs look great and which one look horrible.

Your Own Creativity

Trust your own creativity. You can mix and match designs or you can answer some questions to arrive at a good design. What are you interested in? What inspires you? What is your life long passion? What do you love the most?

Today, people choose to be tattooed for cosmetic, sentimental/memorial, religious, and magical reasons, and to symbolize their belonging to or identification with particular groups, including criminal gangs but also a particular ethnic group or law-abiding subculture. Some Maori still choose to wear intricate moko on their faces. In Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, the yantra tattoo is used for protection against evil and to increase luck.
