Tak Loy Krathong Sai festival: 17-21 Nov 2010

In the north of Thailand the Loy Krathong Sai festival of Lights is a beautiful night time event where Thai's float decorated Krathongs, (banana leaves folded into a circle, illuminated with candles, incense, and other decoration) - a real highlight of any Thailand holiday. The celebrations of Loy Krathong in Tak province is a celebration where the local custom is to thread coconut shell Krathongs together and float them in a candlelit chain down the Ping Riverin Amphoe Mueang Tak from the 200 year-old Rattanakosin Bridge. Hat Yai Lantern festival: 1 Nov 2010 - 28 Feb 2011

In the deep south of the Thailand in Songkhla province the spectacular Hat Yai Lantern festival has become one of the most beautiful and diverse night time spectacles around, and is understandably popular with travellers to Thailand. This international festival lasts 4 months from 4pm till 9pm every night and the theme this year is the Seven Wonders of the World. The categories vary from animal planet, lanterns of the east, birds of paradise and many more. The lanterns are made from paper or cloth with bamboo frames and can be seen floating on the lake, hanging from structures, or flying in the sky. This year they also have an ice dome to display the frozen sculptures, but be sure to remember to wrap up as the dome reaches a chilly -9. This festival is held in the municipal park Hatyai Songkhla and so prebooking tickets in advance is advised. Sunflower festival: Nov 2010 - Jan 2011

Throughout the months of November to January flower lover's and Thailand travellers alike flock to the northern providences of Phatthana Nikhom and Khok Samrong to celebrate this beautiful flower. During the months of November to February the locals cover the town in sunflowers making everything yellow! With 12,000 acres of this flower in this province taking the train ride that runs along this area is a must. The state also runs special day trains to Pasak dam, on public holidays and during the weekend, where the view over the fields is regarded as one of the best.

Previously this flower was grown as a decorative addition to brighten up a Thai house, but now the region of Lop Buri harvest the flower for its oil and the seed snack are regarded as a valuable cash crop.

In the past the former capital of Thailand, Ayutthaya, was regarded too close to the sea in the event of invasion and so Lop Buri was developed as the second capital and so boasts king Nari's palace and 3 pagodas which the king would reside in during the wetter months. Chiang Thai National Elephant Day March, 13

In a country where the elephant has been such a huge historical contribution in agriculture, transport as well as used in war, it is not unexpected that this majestic beast is regarded with so much respect. Many Thais see the outline of Thailand as the shape of an elephants head, with the main head to the north, the ears flapping back towards the east and the trunk running down the peninsular to the far south.

This festival is held in the Maesa elephant camp just outside Chiang Mai in the north of the country, and would be a true Thailand travel experience. This camp was set up for elephants that have had a hard working life and can now retire in peace and comfort. The festival starts around 12 noon and the entrance to the park is free for locals and people on holiday in Thailand.

Previously to become a working elephant, they would start their training at the age of 3 years old where they would be sent to elephant school. As the logging industry is now in decline, and with the large number of tourists visiting the country, elephants are used largely in the tourist industry to take visitors for rides through the jungle. This Thai festival pays respect and honour to these beasts in the form of a Kantoke feast laid on for the elephants as well as blessings and an exhibition by the veterinary medicine faculty of the Chiang Mai university on baby elephants.

Bangkok celebrates Loy Krathong with a “Colours of the River, Loy Krathong Festival” 19 to 21 November 2010 at Suan Luang Rama VIII Park, on the Thonburi side of town.

This is not-to-be-missed experience reflects the atmosphere of a traditional Loy Krathong festival dating back to the historical, golden era known as Rattanakosin.

Held on the full moon night in November the festival is essentially a family affair celebrated nationally in every province.

In Bangkok, celebrations focus on cultural performances, traditional markets, and illuminated boat parades along the Chao Phya River from the Krungthep Bridge to Krung Thon Bridge.

But travellers to six other tourist destinations will be equally impressed by the traditional renderings of a festival that focuses on giving thanks for the gifts of water and life.

The 2nd edition of the Phuket Film Festival which runs June 4 – 13 on the beautiful resort island of Phuket, Thailand is pleased to announce its Opening Film will be the Asian premiere of Indian director Paresh Mokashi's debut film, Harishchchandrachi Factory. Director Mokashi will attend.

Harishchchandrachi Factory was India's entry to the 2010 Oscars in the Foreign Language Film category.

The quirky, light hearted film depicts the struggle of Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema, while making Raja Harishchandra in 1913, India's first feature film.

The movie is one of several Indian movies the Phuket Film Festival will play as it turns the Spotlight on Indian Films which have recently reached international box-office acclaim.

"We're honouring India not only as their cinema industry turns 100 years old but because of the close relationship between Indian filmmakers and Thailand," said Scott Rosenberg, managing director of AMW International Co. Ltd. organizers of the Phuket Film Festival.

In November '09 Thailand was presented with the top filming locations award at the Locations World Exhibition and Conference held in Mumbai while Indian location shoots and film production in Thailand have increased from 31 in 2003 to 104 in 2009 (end of November) outpacing the traditional number one Japanese filmmakers.

Film Festival movies will be shown at the Coliseum Cineplex in Phuket Town while a "Meet the Directors" series will be held at an open air theatre just now under construction at Cape Yamu.

The Phuket Film Festival will screen acclaimed Thai director Yuthlert Sippapak's Friday Killer as its closing film, Sunday, June 13 2010. This will be a World Premier for director Sippapak's first movie in The Killers Trilogy.

Director, writer, and producer Yuthlert Sippapak has received international recognition for his daring visual style and unconventional screenwriting. His film credits include Killer Tattoo (2001), February (2003), and Buppah Rahtree (2003) which is one of Thailand’s highest grossing films, popular for its eccentric storyline and blend of horror with comedy.

Friday Killer is the story of “Pae Uzi” (comedian Suthep Pho-ngam) aka “The Eagle of Chantaburi”, a professional hit-man who was just set free from prison. After his release, he learns for the first time he has a daughter “Dao” (Ploy Jindachote – actress played lead role with William Hurt and Cary Elwes in the supernatural thriller 'Shadows'). The tables are turned on Pae when his daughter tries to kill him because she thinks that he killed the only father that she knew.

Cast and crew are expected to attend the closing movie and reception that will follow.

The Killers Trilogy is produced by Sippapak's Mahagan Pictures with financing from Phranakorn Film who is also handling international sales and domestic distribution.

Cool music to beat summer heat

Pattaya International Music Festival gets underway 20 March to help residents and visitors to beat recession blues.

The grand Pattaya Music Festival is back in town to entertain music lovers. This is an unrivalled opportunity to enjoy a weekend of listening and dancing to beautiful music performed by more than 100 musicians. Fun awaits everyone, 20 to 22 March.

Postponed last year, the festival is back and promises to be an annual event.
According to Pattaya’s city hall it was revived to lighten the mood to give residents and tourists all the more reason to smile and enjoy the resort.
It echoes the sentiments of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night – “if music be the food of love play on”…

The event is also part of a wider nation-wide campaign “Amazing Thailand Amazing Value” managed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to deliver events and value-for-money features to Thai and international travellers.

For music lovers it will certainly enhance their holiday and will also help to turn Pattaya into a musical paradise broadening its appeal.

The event is supported by well-known music companies such as GMM Grammy and its partners Modernine TV, Channel [V] Thailand, Channel [V] International and the Korea Foundation for International Exchange.

International musicians will be flown in by recording companies such as SM Entertainment from Korea, EEG from Hong Kong, Ocean Butterfly from China, House of Indies from Vietnam, Halo Music from Malaysia, AMPHEAD from Australia, INDEE RECORDS from Laos, and AVEX from Taiwan.

Thai musicians include Golf&Mike, Pancake, Clash, ABNormal, Paradox, Bodyslam, Ebola, Zeal, Joey Boy and THE STAR.

International artists such as SHINEE and Girl’s generation from Korea, Kym Jin Sha from China, Cirque due Freak from Australia, Minh Thu from Vietnam, Rynn Lim from Malaysia, and Kenny Kwan from Hong Kong will also join the event.

TAT is responsible for two of the stages, one at the south Pattaya pier (Bali Hai) and one at Soi 4 on Pattaya beach road. The third stage in central Pattaya, is funded by a Bt10 million budget and run by Pattaya city and Chonburi Provincial Administrative Organisation.

Tourism Authority of Thailand, Phuket Office and Phuket Japanese Association will hold “The 4th Phuket Japanese Festival” on the 7th of March 2009 at Queen Sirikit Park in Phuket Town.

As we are one of the parts of Phuket, we would like to provide the opportunity to the local people who is working for the tourism and local students interested in Japan and Japanese people through the Japanese traditional festival which introduce the Japanese culture and foods, and we hope these experiences will help them to be familiar with Japanese tourists.

And also, we hope this festival make Japanese children in Phuket improve their knowledge of Japan.

Due to the economic crisis and the Bangkok Airport closed last year, it is very hard situation for Japanese market. So we hope this festival shows the good news of Phuket through the media to Japan and can be contributed to the tourism as we usually had done in the past.

Also, In order to promote further exchanges between Japan and Mekong Region Countries (Kingdom of Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Union of Myanmar, Kingdom of Thailand, and Socialist Republic of Viet Nam), it was decided at the Japan-Mekong Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in January 2008 to celebrate the year 2009 as "Mekong-Japan Exchange Year." By the government.

In this Japanese festival, it came to co-sponsor with The Japan Foundation, Bangkok, and to screen the movies as a film festival, and it is authorized as one of the events of the Japan - Mekong Exchange Year. Two movies will be shown (“YUKI NI NEGAUKOTO” and “BEAT KIDS”).

The movies will be shown at the Baan Kathu School one day before the festival on March 6, 2009 and it is also one of the promotions for the festival.

We will hold the first speech contest during the festival. We would like to provide the opportunity to the students who are studying Japanese hard, and we hope they use this event for the improved motivation to further studying Japanese.

In others, the Heisei Nozomi no Kai, Japanese acting volunteer group comes from Japan to show the Edo folk craft as same as the last time, and you will enjoy it. And also we will organize Thai Classical Dancing Performance to present Thai Traditional cultural for relationship between Thailand and Japan; such as local Thai dessert.

Phangan Film Festival 2009

The Phangan Film Festival grew out of a pure love for meaningful independent filmmaking. Additionally, the organizers are world travelers who rejoice in the cross-cultural expansion that subtly transforms all those who wander far and wide, and they embrace film as a medium for this soul-level evolution.

The 2009 Phuket International Blues Rock Festival promises to be bigger than ever with at least 12 acts performing on stage during the two-night event. Now a firm fixture in Phuket’s annual entertainment calendar, the festival attracts top blues bands from around Thailand, while two popular bands from Australia and the US return once more.

Ricky Zen will once again MC the event which will have a minimum of twelve acts total with five international bands, and its headliner will be none other than Eric Bibb! Eric is a New York native but has lived in Europe most of his adult life. He is one of the greatest contemporary bluesers and tours constantly all over the world. We are very pleased to have been able to secure this wonderful artist for the 2009 show.

Next on the big newcomer list is California’s Mitch Woods and his Rocket 88s. Mitch is a world class New Orleans style boogie-woogie piano man and has set crowds abuzz around the world for 30+ years. From Europe comes Bert Deivert & Janne Zander, a top rated blues duo from Sweden.

The OZ contribution to the festival this year is a beautiful lady from the city of Perth in Western Australia. Her name is KNIKI and her voice is grunty, strong and sexy. Having listened to her just released second cd, "JUST", we just felt compelled to invite her to the 2009 show.

The 2009 festival will see a tribute act for the first time: "Chasing Jimi" - a Tribute to Jimi Hendrix featuring Jimmy Fame (USA).

By popular demand Rich Harper will return along with The Blues Machine and Bangkok’s Cannonball.

Our very own Groove Doctors fronted by Tony ’Hacksaw’ Wilson will also be back for some on-stage surgery.

In Bed With Pattaya

The Very first Thailand charity Bed Push will take place on Sunday the 8th February, 2009 from 2pm from outside the Royal Garden Plaza, along Beach Road and Walking Street ending at Bali Hai.

Organized by the Rotary Club of Pattaya in partnership with Pattaya city Hall, it will provide a great social activity for everyone in the bars, clubs, community groups and businesses together and attract sponsors for this unique, not to be missed event in Thailand.

The idea of a Bed Push or Bed Race is a very popular fundraising and family activity in many countries around the world including the UK, USA , Australia and New Zealand, It is a tried and tested successful way of fundraising for local charities and community projects. It involves teams of up to 6 members dressed as outrageous and funny as possible, pushing their spectacularly decorated beds from a designated starting point to the finishing line, The object is to not only get to the line in the shortest time but also to keep the designated passenger to remain on the bed at all times.

This first ever Bed Push Race in Pattaya will be a major undertaking by the Rotary Club of Pattaya and will no doubt require the help and cooperation of the Pattaya community to safeguard and contribute to a well managed family orientated event! Chinese New Year is the most important event of the traditional Chinese holidays.
The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month and this year, it falls on 26 January, 2009.

In Bangkok, the Samphanthawong District, is the largest China Town in Thailand. It’s also well–known as the street of goldsmith shops and various tasteful dishes. A thing-not-to-miss!
As it’s the celebration of the Chinese New Year, let’s experience authentic Chinese cultural performances from the various regions and provinces of P.R. China and welcome the performers who come to celebrate this wonderful event with us here.

Where do they come from?
1. Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
Located in the South of China with its border close to Vietnam.
Its people are Zhuang, who has a way of life and language similar to Thailand and Lao PDR. The performers are from Nanning the capital and largest city, and they will perform various cultural performances, acrobatics and Chinese opera (changing masks).

2. Hainan Province
It is the second largest island located in the South China Sea with a population of around 10 million. Thai people know it as “Hai Lam” which is the sister city of Phuket. As it’s an island, we will enjoy island culture and folk plays.

3. Shandong Province
Are you ready to be excited? The Shandong performers, who come from the Northeast – Central, will stimulate your heart with performances from Yantai City, another sister city of Phuket, with demonstrations of Kung Fu fighting and martial arts.

4. Anhui Province
Located in the centre near the Yangtze River, the hometown of Bao Qingtian, the Justice of the Supreme Court of the province who is well-known for being loyal and honest. Anhui performers will present their wonderful typical show and Chinese opera in the act of Bao Qingtian.

5. Heilongjian Autonomous Region
Talking about one of the coldest cities in the world, “Harbin” will always be on the top rank as it’s located at the northernmost part of the country where its temperature is sometimes -40 degrees. In this connection, they will bring wonderful music and chorus accompanying folk instrument to present to you.

6. Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
If you know Genghis Khan or Kublai Khan, it’s now time to welcome people from their region Inner Mongolia. As the geography is steppes and highland,
their performances derive from their way of life and tradition.

7. Jilin Province
It maybe a little bit strange to hear “Jilin Province”, but you will feel familiar if you’re informed that, its people are Manchu. To celebrate the Chinese New Year Festival, they will perform a wonderful magic show.
