Railay Beach

Those who want the unspoiled effect of a Thailand holiday should visit Railay Beach. Railay Beach is located off of the coast of Thailand and is a very small island. There are a few hotels throughout the beach but for the most part, it is largely untouched. Nature enthusiasts and those who want to get away from it all enjoy visiting this tranquil part of Thailand.

If you like a lot of adventure on your holiday, or simply want to enjoy nature at its finest, Railay Beach is the ideal tourist destination for you. Despite the fact that it is a small island, there is so much beauty and so much to do that you can easily spend a couple of weeks here without seeing everything.

Do you like sea kayaking? This is similar to canoeing but not as dangerous. A sea kayak is less likely to tip over because the bottom of the boat is flat. Even beginners can learn to maneuver these small boats that are made for two people, along the coast of the island so they can take in all of the natural beauty.

Deep sea diving is one of the biggest adventure attractions in Thailand and Railay Beach offers many different diving spots. You will have to rent a boat to take you off of the coast where you can dive into the Andaman sea to spot the various aqua life that is native to this part of the world. If you just want to snorkel, you can do this as well, just off of the coast of the beach. Snorkeling is easy and fun for people of all ages. It is the best way to see some of the sea life that unique to the area.

Elephant trekking is a very popular activity throughout Thailand and even more so in Railay Beach where the elephant camp is more spacious and the mahouts more gentle and knowledgeable. One of the things you have to be careful about when elephant trekking is that the giant creatures are handled properly. Elephants are gentle animals, but if mistreated can end up causing serious harm to anyone around them because of their size. Many of the elephant camps in Thailand treat the animals poorly or are just an opportunity to pose while sitting atop an elephant. Elephant trekking in Railay Beach is an adventure of a lifetime as you can ride the elephants throughout the jungles with your gentle and experienced guide.

Despite the fact that the island is small, there are plenty of good places to eat. The local restaurants feature some of the freshest seafood imaginable and the hotel restaurants offer a variety of cuisine, including Chinese, Indian and Western. For the freshest seafood and most authentic Thai food available, come to Railay Beach.

Whether you want to lounge on the beach and soak up the tropical sun, dive into the crystal clear water and enjoy the ocean life. Or if you want to explore the jungle on the back of a gentle, Asian elephant, the choice is yours when you visit Railay Beach, Thailand.

A Hot Bed Of Fun And Investment Potential, Thailand’s Koh Samui Is Truly Paradise On Earth.

Twenty years ago, Koh Samui was a sleepy backwater. An island of calm, clear blue waters, crystal white beaches populated only by fishermen and a few marijuana-smoking backpackers: what Alex Garland maybe had in mind when he wrote “The Beach”. The reason for Koh Samui’s allure was obvious. Situated in the middle of the Gulf of Siam, Koh Samui is blessed with year-round sunshine and pristine beaches. Like all good secrets, news spread quickly of this ‘jewel in the sea’ and it led to Koh Samui becoming one of the world’s best-know tropical destinations for foreigners in their endless quest for a mythical paradise.

By far the most popular area on Koh Samui is Chaweng on the East coast, with its large white-sand beach, luxury hotels, restaurants and nightlife. Due to the lack of available land now around Chaweng, other areas such as Lamai, Ban Taling Ngam and Bang Por are undergoing major development and are set to boom in the very near future. The North and Southwest of Koh Samui is likely to become a major ‘hotspot”, with some of the biggest plots of land on the island being available and where some of the largest private houses are being built.

The real estate situation is in a lull at the moment following some recent illegal development scandals and as a result of the current political instability, but with new elections being held later this year and reputable agencies like Savills and Exotiq entering the market, the situation can only get stronger.

Currently part of the province of Suratthani, Koh Samui is soon about to become a province in its own right, meaning much more money from the central government and consequently much better investment in the island’s infrastructure, making it an even better option for foreign investors. The airport is set for major renovations, which will result in easier access to South-East Asian destinations and increased tourist numbers, the Hyatt is developing a new hotel and Big C and Club Med also have plans to build new resorts on the island. Combine this with the fact that glitterati such as David and Victoria Beckham, Dustin Hoffman and Kristen Justin-Henin have recently bought land in Koh Samui; it lends loads of confidence to the island’s real estate market. With both property and cultural developments such as these, surely it can only add to Koh Samui’s reputation as one of the World’s top island destinations.

Sun, Sea, Sand, Jomtien Beach – Thailand

For the ultimate beach vacation there is no better location than that of “Jomtien Beach” in Thailand. Which is just a two hours ride in a taxi from Bangkok Airport. The Jomtien Beach is located about two kilometers from its busy counterpart resort of South Pattaya.

Jomtien Beach and the area along its beach road have now become more and more popular for swimming, water sports and activities because it has a long straight coastline and they’re being less boats anchored in its waters. There are very many good quality hotels, bungalows and guesthouses. A wide range of small and large condominiums is also available for short or long term rental and many good restaurants serving a wide variety of fresh seafood with a full range of Thai cuisine and International dishes.

Many tourists come to this area to just enjoy the scenery and the beach. Chairs are available to sit with a table to have food and drink served directly to you as you soak up the sun or simply lay back and listen to the waters lapping on the sand. Go swimming or enjoy water sports such as wind surfing, ride a water scooter, parasail or take a speed boat ride, even water skiing is possible.

The Jomtien Beach has good quality white sand and a very long coastline to enjoy. The beach is much more peaceful here than its counterpart of Pattaya further up the coast. The beaches are always kept in a pristine condition by the many vendors who are there to look after all your needs.

Along the early part of the straight beach road you will find many souvenir shops, international restaurants, food stalls. But at the far end of the beach road there are very good seafood restaurants and it is where you can find yourself at times the only person soaking up the sun.

You can also swim late into the night along a large part of the beach as the sands are floodlit which makes for a very safe environment to swim after the sun has gone down. May be you only want to simply find a quiet bar for any drink of your choosing. Many are available and the prices have to be seen to be believed.

Jomtien beach simply has it all without having to travel long distances. But if you fancy a more adventurous evening and want to enjoy a full range of nightlife activities Pattaya is just a few minutes down the coast. Transportation around the Pattaya and Jomtien area is simple. The open pick up cars (Baht buses as they are locally called) are running all the time. Just hail one down and climb aboard.

Jomtien is one place in the world where a good quality beach vacation is simplicity itself.
How do I know these things – I live there.

Health Tourism In Thailand

Private healthcare in the West is notoriously expensive, for some, prohibitively so. Commonplace medical items like dentistry or health check ups are high-priced, while surgery and major operations can completely bankrupt many individuals. Thus, the rapidly-growing practice of traveling across international borders to obtain healthcare.

Many have found their solutions in Thailand, spurring a trend in "health tourism" within the country. Why Thailand? Because the Thai medical profession is one of the most advanced in the region. Thailand's hospitals and clinics are world class. Investments in equipment and management standards are so high that major hospitals are "internationally accredited".

The following are some "ball park" cost comparisons. The cost of surgery can be one-tenth of what it is in the United States or Western Europe, and sometimes even less. A heart-valve replacement that would cost $200,000 or more in the US, for example, goes for $10,000 and that includes round-trip airfare and a brief vacation package. Similarly, a metal-free dental bridge worth $5,500 in the US costs around $500. A knee replacement in Thailand with six days of physical therapy costs about one-fifth of what it would in the US. Lasik eye surgery worth $3,700 in the US is available for around $730. In the US cataract surgery for one eye runs around $8,000, but at a prestigious International hospital in Thailand cataract surgery can be performed on both eyes for around $2,500. Cosmetic surgery savings are even greater: A full facelift that would cost $20,000 in the US runs about $1,200. A thorough dental cleaning and checkup runs around $10.00.

Tourists are drawn to Thailand for many reasons - tropical beauty, splendid beaches, and a fascinating culture. Now however, health is yet another reason that lures visitors to the kingdom. Thailand has become the spa capital of Asia. The country abounds in health clubs and spas, and offers an incredible amount of sporting activities, everything from golfing to scuba diving, and from biking to cave exploring.

Thai Airlines features what is known as Royal Orchid Holidays. Medical checkups, has become so important, Royal Orchid Holidays has added medical checkups to its package tours. It's an unusual theme for a package tour, perhaps, but a very practical one, giving travelers the opportunity to have a comprehensive medical checkup while they are in Thailand for business or pleasure. Quality healthcare combined with a tourism holiday at a low price attracts patients from all over the world.

On the medical side, an Internet search of the International hospitals in Bangkok will provide all the information necessary regarding medical procedures available and the related costs. While the list is long, to start, your search should include the popular Bumrungrad Hospital, Bangkok Hospital,Samitivej Hospital, and Bangkok Nursing Home Hospital. They are all internationally accredited hospitals.

On the tourism side, Thailand is known as The Land of Smiles. It is often referred to as the most exotic country in Southeast Asia. In Bangkok a visit to the Grand Palace is a must see. Trips to a floating market or to the Bridge on the River Kwai, or other popular destinations, are easily arranged and inexpensive, even with a personal driver. A short flight or overnight train trip and you can be enjoying the pristine beaches in the Southern Islands or the Northern mountains with its waterfalls, elephants bathing in mountain streams, and Hill Tribe villages.

Consider Health Tourism in Thailand. You will readily see that you can have a medical procedure, and a wonderful holiday, all at less cost that you would have paid for the medical procedure alone in the West.

4 Most Beautiful Thailand Beaches

Thailand has one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. For those that have traveled there they know that the beauty of this untouched place makes for some of the best vacations in the world. This is coupled with the vast amount of historical culture that abounds the countryside and there is never a shortage of things to do in this country. Because much of this land is untouched by development you will find that relaxation and peaceful living is more than possible. The reaches of the mighty have not gotten this far and that means that you will get the very best in the vacation arena, especially when it comes to the Thailand beach areas.

Khao Lak is a wonderful Thailand beach. Just a short drive from the airport, this paradise offers a remote vacation area like no other. Thanks to the area being largely uninhabited, there is lush rain forest nearby along with a whole host of wildlife to be viewed. The water remains warm in the November through December months and the fishing and scuba diving is out of this world.

Phuket Thailand Beach is another great spot. Enjoy this resort November through March. There is more than enough to do. It is a bit more crowded than other beaches as this area thrives on the tourism dollars that it brings in. The scuba diving is top notch in this area and you will also find some of the warmest most clear water in the world. There are several nearby attractions to keep one busy for quite a few days.

Phi Phi Don Thailand beach is quite the turn around. Once a remote and nearly unknown place, this Thailand beach came to life when Hollywood came in and filmed a movie here. It is now considered to be one of the most popular beaches in the entire country and is frequented by many big names. This is a site that you will not want to miss, as the views are breathtaking and the water warm and inviting.

West Raily Thailand beach is one of the undiscovered diamonds in the rough. There is very little that is expensive here and one can stay at the "resort" for over a week and barely tap the budget. The sands are milky white and the water clear. Scuba diving is very popular here as well as the fishing. This location is only accessible by long tail boat so plan for a bit of a long ride.

Similan Island

A Similan Island is where you want to go if you want to dive in Thailand. The Similan Island chain is a group of nine islands that are located off the Southern coast of Thailand and are known for being the best places for deep sea diving in Asia.

The Similan Island chain is actually now a national park that was established in Thailand in 1982. If you want to got to any of these nine islands, you can visit by boat. There are many boat rides available to the islands from Phuket Island as well as the mainland of Thailand.

Although the area is known for the many diving sites where diving enthusiasts visit each year, it also boasts some of the most beautiful tropical foliage in Thailand and is the home for much wildlife that is native to this area. Many of the people who visit the Similan Island go for the scenery such as waterfalls, tropical gardens and rare bird life.

The largest island of the Similan Island chain is Ko Similan. Ko Similan has some of the most beautiful underwater rocks and coral reefs in the world. In addition to diving, people visit this island for snorkeling as there are sites to be seen under the water that cannot be viewed anywhere else in the world.

Those who want to lounge on the beach can do so at Ko Huyong which has the largest beach in the Similan Island chain. This beach is known for that where the giant sea turtles migrate each year to lay their eggs. The eggs are protected by the park officials, but visitors can view these eggs if they visit in the fall.

There are two different types of deep sea diving practiced at the Similan Island National Park. They consist of East side diving which gives you a view of coral reefs and West side diving that has large underwater rocks and swim through tunnels. The most famous East side dive site in the Similan Island chain is East of Eden which is located just off of the seventh island.

While two of the larger islands are named, most of the islands just go by numbers. The natives know them as “island seven” or “island four.”

The most famous West side dive site in the island chain is Elephant Head Rock. Elephant Head Rock is also the name of one of the oldest diving shops that is located in Phuket Island. To actually see whale sharks while diving, you will have to go to Richelieu Rock which is also part of the Similan Island chain. Many people feel that this is the ultimate deep sea diving spot in the world as, in addition to the whale sharks, other underwater life is abundant in this area.

You do not have to be a diving enthusiasts, however, to appreciate the Similan Island chain. When on holiday in Thailand, make sure that you a day to explore this beautiful chain of islands located off the southern tip of Thailand.

Phuket Weather

Most of the people who travel to Phuket Island, Thailand, visit during the months between November through March. This is known as the “high” season of tourism. During this time, it is quite warm and humid. The temperatures in the high season are very hot and average around 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Phuket weather is tropical weather. During the high season, it often rains in the afternoons and cools everything off. The rain during the non-monsoon season is short lived and does not stop any activities. Most of natives of Phuket are used to the rain as they live through the monsoon season every year.

The hot and tropical weather makes Phuket an ideal place to visit when you want to get away from the cold. People who live in parts of Western Europe and North America experience extremely cold temperatures from November through March, which is when it is the hottest in Phuket.

From late May to November, the Phuket weather gets a bit cooler, which is about 88 degrees Fahrenheit, on the average. Visiting Phuket during this time of the year can be very pleasant as the cooler temperatures make sightseeing a little more enjoyable. The incessant rain does not stop any of the activities on the island as it is seen as cooling. During the month of May, it will rain on the average of 25 days throughout the month. After this, however, it does not rain as often, although you can still count on getting rain if you visit Phuket during the monsoon season.

The best months to visit Phuket are June through August. During this time, there are short storms, but the temperatures are not as high as they are during September through November. Some tourists prefer to visit Phuket during the monsoon season because the hotels generally offer special discounts as do most of the shops. If you are seeking to travel to Phuket on a budget, the time to go is from May to November.

The Phuket weather is always hot, to those who are used to a variety of temperatures. It rarely dips below 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which, to some in the West, is very hot weather. It rains often, but more during the monsoon season. The tropical climate adds to the foliage of the area and allows certain plants and fruits to grow in this climate.

The only thing that you cannot do during the monsoon season is swim off the West beaches. This is because there are strong currents at this time of the year. Other than that, the monsoon season rarely affects any trips or pleasure activities. For most people, traveling to Phuket during the monsoon season can be more pleasant when it comes to Phuket weather, than traveling in the high season when it is so very hot all of the time.

When packing for your trip to Phuket Island, Thailand, remember to bring light clothing and swimming costumes as well as plenty of sun block. The Phuket weather is guaranteed to be hot and will most likely be sunny during most of your holiday.

Thailand Scuba Diving: Best Dive Sites In The Similan Islands

The Similan Islands lie a few hours boatride of the coast of Phuket in Thailand. They are a group of nine uninhabited islands with a spectacular collection of dive sites scattered amongst them. Here are the top four Similan dive sites in my opinion, although that is pretty subjective - they're all good!

East Of Eden

Dive Rating: 8/10
Depth: 5 to 35m
Level of experience: All
Photographic productivity: 9

Renown its huge bommie which has been featured numerous times in underwater nature documentaries, East Of Eden is a great dive site for photographers and fun divers alike. A broad, gentle slope along Similan Island No. 7, leopard sharks can sometimes be found sitting on the sand at 35 metres. Scanning the coral finds octopus, mantis shrimp and morays amongst the profusion of coral outcrops, which lead nicely into the home of Emma, a giant moray that lives with her partner in a clump of solitary coral surrounded by sand. At least 2 metres long, Emma is usually friendly but, as always, should be treated with respect. Just beyond her place lies the bommie, rising from 25 metres up to 10 metres, constantly changing to the eye the nearer a diver gets to it. From far away it seems large but otherwise nondescript – but close up, it turns into an exquisitely delicate meshing of fan corals and fish life, with ghost pipefish hovering almost undetected amongst the bommie’s technicolour explosion.

North Point

Dive Rating: 7/10
Depth: 5 to 40m
Level of experience: All
Photographic productivity: 6

This is one site where you can experience the big blue in all its true enormity. North Point proper is a big boulder site on a slope, providing lots of nooks and crannies to explore. But North Point also has a clump of outer rocks about 10 minutes further out, where leopard and reef sharks can be found. The fin out to the rock is exhilarating in itself thanks to the usually excellent viz – the ocean floor lies 30 metres below and nothing else is around – it’s the closest you’ll get to flying. One critter that’s hard to find but worth the hunt is the preying mantis shrimp, which lives in its own hole and comes out at lightning speed to snatch its prey if it detects movement above its lair. Turtles can often be spotted in the shallows at North Point munching on coral – great entertainment during a safety stop.

Koh Bon

Dive Rating: 8/10
Depth: 5 to 30m
Level of experience: Intermediate
Photographic productivity: 9

For many divers, Koh Bon proves to the highlight of a Similans Island liveaboard, because it’s where they get to meet a manta ray face to face. The name translates as Hope Island, and every diver who comes here secretly hopes they’ll see the mantas that regularly turn up. A near vertical wall that drops down to a reef at around 15 metres, Koh Bon is a suitably dramatic setting for manta encounters, which silently glide in from the blue and like to run parallel with the wall – sometimes parallel with divers themselves. The reef itself is a little damaged from bomb fishing but still boasts a huge patch of staghorn coral and is also home to octopus, mantis shrimp and the occasional reef shark. Currents can be strong here, especially out in the blue, so it’s best to stay near the wall and let the mantas come in when they feel comfortable around divers.

Richelieu Rock

Dive Rating: 9/10
Depth: 5 to 30m
Level of experience: Intermediate
Photographic productivity: 9

Widely considered the best dive site in all of Thailand, Richelieu’s distinctive horse shaped pinnacle in the middle of ocean seems to harbour a never ending collection of critters. Glassfish crowd the descent line, seahorses lie at 35 metres, stonefish seem to lurk on every rock – it’s difficult to know where to look first! Not only is Richelieu a macro delight, its open ocean position means it’s also a hot spot for whale sharks, which are seen here a few times each dive season. Similarly, manta rays have been known to circle the pinnacle, only metres from the surface. Most dive boats do two dives at Richelieu as there is so much to see. The only caveat is that currents can be very strong (the inside of the horseshoe provides good shelter) and the viz can drop to 10 metres sometimes too. Even so, Richelieu has such an abundance of amazing marine life that it rarely disappoints divers.

Going Out In Phuket Island

There is so much to do in Phuket Island that it will be difficult for you to cram everything into your holiday time. Most likely, you will be planning your trip to Phuket Island for the next year prior to leaving as most people who visit this part of the world try to make it an annual event.

When going out in Phuket island, you will probably want some transportation. You can rent a tuk tuk, which is a taxi cab, or take the bus. Be careful not to allow the tuk tuk driver to be your “guide” during your holiday. Tourists are often an easy target in any tourist area and Phuket Island is no different. Arrange a fare with the driver before you allow him to take you anywhere.

Phuket Island is a relatively safe holiday destination and is probably much safer than large cities in the West. There are tourist police everywhere and most of them speak English as well as an assortment of other languages. Many of the people who visit Phuket Island come from Europe, Australia and Japan. People in the United States are just beginning to discover the wonders of Phuket Island as air fare to this part of the world continues to drop.

You should be careful to take precautions when going out in Phuket Island, Thailand. Stay on the beaten path and do not carry more money than necessary. This is common sense whenever you are traveling anywhere. Going out in Phuket Island, Thailand is no different than going out in your own city. You actually have more of a chance falling prey to a crime when you are at home and your guard is down than while on holiday, but take safety precautions anyway.

When going out in Phuket Island to the markets or night markets, make sure that you keep your money in a place where it will be difficult for someone to sneak away from you. Pick pockets usually work in teams - one person distracts you while the other lifts your wallet. Keep your wits about you and do not carry your wallet in your back pocket where it can easily be snatched.

Dress is casual when going out in Phuket Island, Thailand. Just like any other tourist destination, casual dress is accepted in all of the restaurants. When packing for your trip, bring some casual but smart clothes that can be worn in the nicer restaurants. Remember that the weather is very hot in Phuket Island and pack accordingly.

When going out in Phuket Island, Thailand, you can visit some of the nightclubs that play live music or visit the wild side of town in Patong where the go go bars are still operating. Phuket Island relies on the tourist trade for their living and although some hedonistic pleasures, such as the go go bars, are frowned upon, they still operate in abundance, particularly in Patong Beach.

For a more sedate time when going out in Phuket Island, Thailand, visit Phuket Town and view some of the historic sites. In Phuket Town, you can also dine in some of the finest restaurants on the island. Whatever you want to do during your Asian holiday, you can find it in Phuket Island.

GREEN ISLAND PROJECT – KOH SAMUI THAILAND

The tropical island paradise of Koh Samui (Samui Island) is widely noted for its natural charm. It is the kingdom’s third largest island, and ranks among Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations. In 2007, the award-winning island welcomed 1,059,642 visitors — an increase of 2.82 per cent over the previous year.

With ever-growing pressures on its natural resources, the islanders, especially tourism industry stakeholders, have taken a pro-active stance and are leading the charge to restore environmental quality.

Spearheaded by the Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association, the Thai Hotels Association Southeastern Chapter and Samui Spa Association, with the full support of provincial authorities, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS) and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the “Green Island Project – Koh Samui” was officially launched on June 18, 2007. This three-phase conservation initiative aims to protect and preserve the environment in order to ensure long-term sustainability.

Described by its founding members as “an umbrella organization to network and encourage an environmentally aware mindset on Koh Samui,” project implementation will span a period of ten years. Projects in the initial phase are due for completion within three years.

When the Samui-based associations learnt about TAT’s “Seven Greens” environmental conservation pledge — one of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives being launched by the national tourism organization in 2009, they expressed keen interest. Representatives from the local trade associations advised TAT of plans to make Koh Samui, a ‘green island’ and indicated that supporters of the “Green Island Project” were planning to formally pledge support for the pilot project. Both parties were eager to explore possible synergy.

Members explained their rationale for pursuing the project in a founding statement: “We understand that we as humans affect the environment, but we believe this does not have to be destructive. It can be done in a balanced way, to preserve and even enhance the natural world around us.

“We encourage everyone to participate - individuals, businesses, local organizations, government, The Tourism Authority of Thailand, NGOs and even tourists to create awareness and work together, without judgment or prejudice. We encourage everyone on the island to make a contribution to reduce, recycle, re-use and become more aware of what a green jewel Samui still is.”

The founding members seek the active involvement and participation of all tourism stakeholders and volunteers in efforts to restore, rehabilitate, protect and preserve the natural environment, the cultural landscape, traditions and way of life. This includes state agencies, tourism operators, local communities, media representatives as well as visitors/tourists.

Each will play a designated role.
State Agencies: to establish the direction for development and to promote tourism by taking into consideration available resources and refraining from development beyond capacity
Tourism Operators: to strive to achieve sustainable tourism by adopting an environmentally-friendly mindset, by initiating behavioural change, and by refraining from undertaking activities that upset the ecological balance or disrupt ecosystems
Public Service Organizations: to oversee the implementation of various projects by conducting audits, securing funds, and creating mechanisms to support the achievement of environmental goals
Communities: to promote the harmonious integration of local folk wisdom with new technology in order to address environmental issues and preserve the island’s cultural heritage
Media Representatives: to extend support for the project by raising environmental awareness and to complement related efforts
Tourists: to opt for environmentally-friendly products, services and activities and demonstrate an awareness and true appreciation for the cultural aspects of their stays, and to help contribute to the quality of life in local communities

Prior to the official launch, Executive Director of the TAT Product Promotion Department, Ms Sasi-Apha Sukontarat, participated in the “Greening Koh Samui for Sustainable Tourism” conference — a consultative meeting and working session jointly hosted by the provincial authorities and trade associations.

The island community recognizes that in order to succeed in its endeavours, it needs to actively pursue sustainable tourism development.

“Expressed in the simplest terms, sustainable tourism development means making Samui Island a much nicer place for local residents. By doing so, the island naturally becomes a more attractive and appealing destination for tourists and visitors. This in turn generates socio-economic and other benefits for the local community. Furthermore, these benefits will be passed on to future generations,” Executive Director Sasi-Apha explains.

The priority is to focus on the key elements that are critical factors when it comes to marketing and promoting a destination — to ensure cleanliness and good hygiene; safety; customer satisfaction; and success in attracting repeat visitors.

The ‘Green Island Project — Koh Samui’ master plan will be an integrated plan incorporating joint state and private sector plans as well as the guidelines outlined in TAT’s Seven Greens corporate social responsibility project. Once drafted, the master plan will serve as a guideline for the conduct of activities by all parties involved.

To demonstrate unwavering commitment to the shared goals, on 18 June, the day of the official launch, H.E. Mr Weerasak Kowsurat, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, and Mrs Phornsiri Manoharn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, joined the founding members and project supporters as they pledged their support for the Green Island Project by signing a declaration.

This intent is reflected in a formal pledge. Individuals and organizations participating in the Green Island Project commit to the following guidelines.

Recognize that all tourism activities affect the environment.
Acknowledge that the tourism industry needs to assume responsibility for the protection and preservation of the environment.
Assuming this responsibility means that whenever tourism-related and other activities are being undertaken, they are conducted with the greatest care to ensure minimal impact on the environment.
Achieve a harmonious balance between tourism and conservation. Both can go hand-in-hand.
Recognize that nature has its limits. Development must be kept within limits and should not exceed the natural threshold or carrying capacity.
Promote a better understanding of the delicate balance between tourism and the environment.
Take into proper consideration quality of life, culture, traditions and folk wisdom.

The Green Island Project will span a ten-year period (2008-2017) and is divided into three key phases: the initial phase, the monitoring phase and the control and development phase. Three key activities will be conducted in each phase namely setting goals and objectives, results monitoring and project evaluation.

The short-term plan consists of projects to be completed within a period of three years, the mid-term plan — projects to be completed within five years, and the long-term plan — projects to be completed over 10 years.

Objectives in the initial three-year phase:

To develop increased awareness and promote a better understanding that environmental conservation can be undertaken hand-in-hand with tourism development
To build a cooperative network of various tourism stakeholders and foster close cooperation in undertaking environmental conservation efforts along with initiatives to reduce elements that contribute to global warming which in turn affect tourism and the quality of life
To draft an implementation plan for sustainable tourism. Once drafted, this master plan will serve as a guideline for the conduct of activities by all parties involved.
To decide on an appropriate product positioning and brand image for Koh Samui and jointly pledge commitment to the implementation of The Green Island Project
To launch a full scale destination marketing/tourism promotion campaign featuring the “True Green Koh Samui” theme

With the establishment of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS) in 2002, the new scope of work for Thailand’s national tourism organization now focuses exclusively on marketing and promoting destinations around Thailand and the promotion of the multi-billion baht Thai tourism industry, domestically and worldwide. This is achieved through the conduct of destination marketing campaigns, advertising and public relations, marketing and sales promotions, and participation in international travel trade shows.

In participating in the Green Island Project — Koh Samui, TAT is extending support in line with its marketing and PR mandate.

The MOTS’ Office of Tourism Development assumes duties and responsibilities related to the development of service standard for tourist attractions or sites and tourism products and services offered by the Thai tourism industry. This includes the support of standards for tour businesses and tour guides, in order to achieve sustainable tourism development and generate economic, social and cultural benefits for local communities and the country as a whole.
